Environmental Statement
Internationally Lions and Leos are working to protect the environment to create healthier
communities and a more sustainable world. The Environment is one of the five key
programmes in Lionism.
The timber used for our annual bonfire is locally sourced none-chemically treated. It is
acknowledged that although burning timber releases the CO2 within the timber, it does not create the additional methane gas that would be released if the timber was left to decay.
Waste from the bonfire is commercially disposed of.
The canisters used for the fireworks are made of carboard. The CO2 output from the display is the equivalent to a single car travelling around 88 miles.
To offset the CO2 produced by the event, the Lions are working with schools and local
groups to plant trees and introduce meadow flowers which are seen as a better source of
capturing CO2. We are this year replacing our generators that are used for lighting with
electrically stored power packs. We are also encouraging members of the public attending the event to consider using public transport or as many do, walk to the event.
